China in the Modern World

Course Description

This course will explore some of the connections and conflicts that have intertwined China’s modern history with that of the wider world. During our study, we will focus particularly on the role of science, trade, imperialism, migration, and intellectual exchange during the period stretching from the late Qing dynasty to the Second World War. We will also pause often to consider the ways the past has influenced the present, as well as the way our present perspective informs the way we think about the past.
